NEW TENDENCIES IN PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS: A TALK BY PROF. PATRICE PAVIS

The renowned French theatre researcher and lecturer Patrice Pavis gave a lecture on “New Tendencies in Performance Analysis” at the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival 2023 and we present an excerpt from it. In his talk, he scrutinizes contemporary directions in the performance analysis that have emerged after the formal, neutral, non-historical semiotic approach. What comes after it? Prof. Pavis comments on strategies based on feminism, gender, identity, the question of age, cancel culture, race and postcolonial theory.

Prof. Patrice Pavis is an internationally renowned theater scholar. He has written extensively on performance, theatre and text theory. He is the author and editor of many significant books and readers, including A Dictionary of Theatre (1987), The Analysis of Dramatic Texts (2003), The Analysis of Performances (2005), Contemporary Staging (2007) among others.
