A CONVERSATION WITH JEAN-PIERRE HAN: THE PATHS OF CONTEMPORARY THEATRE

A conversation with French theatre critic Jean-Pierre Han on the paths of contemporary theatre. Jean-Pierre Hahn was a mentor of an international workshop for young critics organised by the International Association of Theatre Critics in collaboration with the Varna Summer International Theatre Festival in Varna from 4-9 June 2023.

Jean-Pierre Han is a professional journalist, as well as a theatre and literary critic. He is the founder and editor of the journal, Frictions, Théâtres-Écriture; and editor of Lettres françaises. He is also a regular contributor to various French, Spanish, South-Korean and German publications. He is a former member of the DRAC Ile-de-France Commission (Direction régionale des affaires culturelles), of the Commission d’aide à la création of the Ministry of Culture, and of the Centre national du livre (theatre section). Han has taught as Associate Professor at the following universities: Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Paris III-Censier (Institut d’études théâtrales), Paris X-Nanterre, Université d’Évry. He is a former President of the French “Syndicat de la critique dramatique”, and currently serves as Vice-President of IATC and Director of the IATC Workshops for Young Critics.

Veneta Doytcheva, PhD, is a theatre critic, researcher and Professor at the National Academy for Theatre & Film Arts. Apart from her studies in Theatre Studies at the NATFA, she finished a master programme in Intercultural Studies at Sorbonne Université de Paris. She was a dramaturge at the Drama Theatre – Sliven (1987) and at the Bulgarian Army Theatre (1998–2011) in Sofia as well as an expert at National Centre for Theatre (1993–1997). Her research interests are theory of drama and Bulgarian Drama. Published books: Words and Erinyes (2010), Theatre bulgare d’aujourd’hui, ed. (2007), The Imagined Body (2016).
